Who it is for

  • Complete beginners who want hands-on technical foundations, not theory alone
  • People in IT, helpdesk or support roles who want to understand the security side of their work
  • Students and self-taught learners who want a broad practical base before choosing a specialism

What you will be able to do

  • Build a free, safe practice lab on your own computer
  • Capture and read live network traffic in Wireshark, and map hosts and services with Nmap
  • Work on the Linux command line and read Windows and Linux logs for evidence
  • Explain what encryption, hashing, signatures and certificates protect, and verify them yourself
  • Recognise how modern attacks work, from AI-assisted phishing to SQL injection and credential theft
  • Triage alerts, find an intrusion in the logs and prioritise the findings of a vulnerability scan

How the course works

Eight modules take you from the core principles of the field through networking, systems and identity, cryptography, the current threat landscape and attack techniques, to defending and responding as a blue-team analyst. The last module covers Zero Trust, cloud and container security, securing AI systems, and governance.

Every module has labs on your own machine. A capstone ties them together: you trace one incident from the first intrusion to the response and write it up.

What this course is not

  • Not a careers course: CV and interview preparation are in Start a Career in Cybersecurity
  • Not certification exam preparation
  • No promises about jobs or income: what you get is skills you can demonstrate

Questions

What computer do I need?

One that can run a free virtual machine, with around 8 GB of RAM to be comfortable, and an internet connection. Every tool used is free or a community edition.

Is it legal to practise attacks?

Everything happens in your own lab or in a legal browser sandbox. The course draws a clear line on authorisation: never test a system you do not own or have written permission to test.

Learn security by doing it

Eleven labs on your own machine, and a capstone write-up that shows what you can do.
